Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has long been considered a gold standard in the mental health therapy world and is labeled as "evidence-based" due to the ample amount of research that has been done focused on certain CBT protocols or methods. CBT essentially focuses on shifting cognitions, because of the assertion that thoughts effect how we feel and how we feel and think subsequently effect how we behave. While there is merit to this, and CBT does have its place in some circumstances, it has often been my experience (and that of countless other therapists who've done deep work with themselves and their clients), that CBT can't get to the metaphorical "nooks and crannies" that exist within the complexities of the human mind, body and inter and intra-relationships- espeically when trauma is involved. Trauma-Focused CBT was developed to help make space for the impact and awareness of trauma, because trauma is more pervasive in our culture than most people realize. However, a focus only or mainly on thoughts, still falls short to help rewire the nervous system that's been functioning on auto-pilot, feeling disconnected, numb or in survival mode for far too long, and it certainly isn't a fit for many neurodivergent people whose brain just isn't wired in such a way that cognitive-heavy focus is helpful- it can even create more frustration and confusion for some.
So, when I say we got "beyond talk therapy" in our work together, what I mean is that we won't just be sitting there, trying to change your thoughts. You've probably done a lot of wrestling with your thoughts and over-thinking in your head already anyway. There can be a resistance that internally builds when you spend too much time trying to combat your thoughts, and we don't want to get stuck in an internal tug of war.
Will we identify, address and work to shift unhealthy or unhelpful thoughts? Sure. But it will not be the sole focus of our work together, because you are much more than just your thoughts. You are a multi-faceted human being that experiences life and relationship through your senses- using your body and your mind. We will therefore need to focus our work in all of these areas, and use tools, techniques and strategy that helps all of these complex systems be worked with, so they can ultimately work together with one another in a way that feels more integrative.
