Brainspotting uses brain + body based science
to rewire the nervous system.
Talk therapy has been around for a long time, but brain and body based practices for healing have as well. We just have not been as aware of, attuned, or willing to explore them within our western culture as we are now. Brainspotting itself is considered a fairly new therapeutic modality. It was discovered by Dr. David Grand when he was doing EMDR as a psychotherapist. He now trains practitioners around the globe in Brainspotting, and he does not use EMDR.
While I am trained in EMDR methods, I prefer to use a less formal, more client-centered approach in my work. Brainspotting allows me to do that.
Brainspotting sessions can look different for different people, but the basic tenets remain the same:
Where you look, effects how you feel.
This is why we find specific eye positions in your visual field during session
The brain + body (nervous system) is way too complex for any one person to know exactly what will come next, so we stay curious in Brainspotting, and are open to the possibilities of where it will take you
We call this 'staying in the tail of the comet'
The relationship between therapist and client is essential
This allows me to attune to you effectively and you to feel safe within the process as you intimately explore what comes up within you
Biolateral stimulation may help deepen the experience and enhance the processing for some folks, but others may not like or want that. Trying out different forms of biolateral stimulation is often (but not always) recommended.
If you're someone whose history has impacted your ability to really sense (notice and be mindfully aware) of your body sensations, then Brainspotting may feel strange to you at first. That's okay. It felt strange for me at first too!
As long as you're willing to have an open heart and mind about trying a different technique, than Brainspotting will likely be of help to you.
Brainspotting can be incorporated into our therapy sessions, in conjunction with other modalities that I use to best serve you. Other modalities often include somatic (body-based) and neuro-psychological (brain-based) as well as written and verbal techniques derived from my years of experience and study of other complementary theories and research.
Some clients want to do Brainspotting-only sessions. This is something that can be done if and when clinically appropriate. Brainspotting can be used outside of clinical work as well. It can be used to support performance and shift mindset barriers within a coaching, teaching or mentorship environment too.
